Before You Light That Fire
Do you know when the Fire Danger Period is in the Shoalhaven? Unless otherwise gazetted, it is 1st September through to the 31st March. During this period it is illegal to light a fire in the open without a permit (exemptions apply).
A permit may be given providing the applicant meets all of the conditions required. A property owner can apply for a permit by contacting the Shoalhaven Fire Control Centre (Ph: 02 4424 4424) or the Captain of the Conjolal Brigade (Geoff Phillips (Ph: 0412552225).
In the event of a Total Fire Ban it is illegal to light a fire even if a permit has been issued.
Outside of the Fire Danger Period, 1st April through to the 31st August, you may light a fire in the open providing you have advised the Shoalhaven Fire Control Centre and your neighbours at least 24 hours prior to lighting.
Heavy fines and/or gaol can apply for not complying with the law.

Neighbourhood Safer Places (NSP)
Did you know that Lake Conjola now has a "Neighbourhood Safer Place" (NSP). A Neighbourhood Safer Place is a place of last resort to shelter from a bush fire.
The Conjola NSP is located at the Lake Conjola Community Centre on the corner of Lake Conjola Entrance Rd and Aney St, Lake Conjola - click here for the location map.
In the event of a major fire those who haven't evacuated or have stayed to protect their homes, and who find themselves facing an immediate threat to their personal safety can gather and seek shelter from the impact of a bush fire at the NSP.
If we have a major fire in the district and emergency personnel have advised the community to evacuate, that advice should be heeded and only those who are fit and able and who have their homes and property well prepared should consider staying.
We all must be aware that in the event of a major fire the local RFS Brigades may not be in the Village.
